Useful Information
Best Season for the Tour
The best seasons are spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November. These months generally offer clearer skies, more stable weather and better visibility of the Annapurna range.
Autumn is often the most reliable for dry roads and sharp mountain views. Spring offers warmer temperatures and fresh color in the lower valleys. Monsoon months can bring muddy roads, landslides and poor visibility in the lower route, while winter can be very cold near Manang, Khangsar and Tilicho Base Camp.
Difficulty Level
This tour is moderate to adventurous. The riding section includes long days, gravel roads, loose stones, dust, river valley roads, hairpin bends and narrow mountain tracks. The hiking section to Tilicho Lake adds a serious physical challenge because it reaches around 4,919 m.
The tour is best for riders with previous motorcycle experience, basic off-road ability and good physical fitness. Complete beginners should take practice rides before joining.
Altitude and Acclimatization
Altitude must be taken seriously on this tour. Riders travel from Kathmandu to Manang and Khangsar within a few days, then hike to Tilicho Base Camp and Tilicho Lake. Symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, poor sleep or unusual tiredness should be reported to the guide immediately.
The itinerary includes Manang and Khangsar time to support acclimatization, but every rider should hydrate well, avoid alcohol at altitude, eat properly and move slowly during the hiking section.
Motorbike and Transportation
Gateway Adventure provides motorcycles suitable for mixed Himalayan terrain, commonly Honda CRF 250, Royal Enfield Himalayan 411/450 or similar models. The selected bike depends on availability, route condition and rider preference.
A short test ride and bike orientation are arranged in Kathmandu. A support vehicle can be added for luggage, tools, spare parts and emergency assistance, especially for larger groups.
Accommodation and Meals
Kathmandu accommodation is arranged in a comfortable hotel. During the mountain section, riders stay in local lodges and teahouses. Facilities become basic as the route approaches Tilicho Base Camp, and attached bathrooms are not always available.
Meals in the mountain region usually include dal bhat, noodles, soup, fried rice, potatoes, eggs, Tibetan bread, tea and coffee. Meal inclusions should be checked against the final package agreement.
Travel Insurance
Every rider must arrange travel insurance that covers motorbike riding, high-altitude travel, trekking up to at least 5,000 m, medical treatment, accident coverage, emergency evacuation, rescue support and trip interruption.
Before buying insurance, confirm that the policy does not exclude off-road motorcycle riding or high-altitude hiking.
Permits and Documents
The route passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, so ACAP is required. TIMS or other trekking registration may also be required depending on the latest regulation and route operation procedure.
Riders should carry a valid passport, Nepal visa, motorcycle license, international driving permit where applicable, travel insurance copy, passport-size photos and emergency contact information.
Preparation and Fitness
Preparation should include regular cardio, leg and core strengthening, long-distance riding practice and basic off-road riding practice. Riders should be comfortable with slow-speed control, clutch use, braking on loose ground and standing on foot pegs where needed.
During the trip, follow the guide’s pace, avoid unnecessary risk, keep distance from other riders and check basic bike condition before each riding day.
